San Pedro Claver or St Peter Claver was a Spanish Jesuit missionary to South America who dedicated his life to aiding enslaved Africans. Through his work, he earned the title “apostle of the Negroes.” He was ordained in 1616 in Cartagena, Colombia. In Cartagena, seeing first hand the horrible conditions at the center of the South American slave market, San Pedro Claver dedicated his life to alleviating their suffering. He nursed the sick, made sure to feed and clothe them, and comforted the distraught through teaching them his faith and baptizing the enslaved.
